Executive board members of the National Border Patrol Council announced this afternoon that CBP still intends to de-authorize AUO on April 7. Furloughs, however, are not supposed to take place.
At the moment, nothing is official. It is now more important than ever to contact your representatives in Congress to let them know what CBP is trying to do (off duty, of course!). Explain to them that even though Congress fully funded CBP for the rest of the fiscal year, CBP has decided to thumb its nose at them and not use the money as it was intended. Not only will this result in serious financial hardship for Border Patrol families, it will leave large gaps in coverage up and down the borders. Make Congress hold CBP accountable for its obligation to protect the border.
NBPC Vice-President Shawn Moran will be on Fox News on the morning of Wednesday, March 27. We are not sure what time he is scheduled to appear, so we'll update this page as soon as we find out. His appearance will not be live, but the clip will air at 9 AM Pacific Standard Time. It is believed that the clip will be aired more than once.
We will post further information as soon as it becomes available.

Now that the continuing resolution has passed, there's no legitimate reason for CBP to continue their crusade against AUO. Hopefully we will here some information from HQ, soon.
At the moment, furloughs are still expected to take place. As April 21st approaches, we will provide further guidance. In the meantime, talk to your steward if you are contesting the furlough to see what is next.

On March 14, 2012, Congressman Henry Cuellar sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor about CBP employees being furloughed as part of sequestration, as well as Border Patrol agents being de-authorized for AUO. Part of his letter reads:

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed DHS Secretary Napolitano's mismanagement of the department under the constraints of the sequestration. Senator Cornyn echoed the same concerns that many Border Patrol employees and informed Americans have been asking themselves. In light of the 28% reduction in time Border Patrol Agents are available to work, scheduled to take effect in April 2013, how can Border Patrol Agents possibly maintain security along the border?
